BASELINE / 01

Prevention works best when it matches your risk.

A

Daily care

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth. The best tools are the ones you can use thoroughly and consistently. Implants, bridges, braces, wider spaces, or limited dexterity may require adapted techniques.

B

Decay and enamel

Frequency of sugar and acid exposure, dry mouth, exposed roots, previous decay, and some medications may increase risk. Fluoride can help strengthen enamel and support repair of early mineral loss when used appropriately.

Seek prompt care for facial swelling, breathing or swallowing difficulty, uncontrolled bleeding, serious trauma, or fever with dental swelling.
C

Gums and maintenance

Bleeding may signal inflammation. Gum assessment can include pocket measurements, recession, mobility, bleeding, and imaging. Ongoing maintenance may be needed after periodontal treatment.

D

Recall timing

There is no ideal interval for every adult. Visit frequency should reflect current disease, history, home care, medical factors, restorations, tobacco use, and risk.

MORE BASELINE

Risk is personal—and it changes.

DRY MOUTH

Saliva matters

Saliva helps buffer acids and protect teeth. Dry mouth may relate to medications, health conditions, hydration, breathing patterns, or treatment. Ask about causes and appropriate support.

WEAR

Not every worn tooth has one cause

Grinding, clenching, acid exposure, brushing, bite forces, and habits can overlap. The pattern and rate of change help guide the conversation.

RESTORATIONS

Cleaning needs change

Bridges, implants, dentures, orthodontic appliances, and extensive restorations may require specific tools and professional maintenance.

SCREENING

Report persistent changes

Sores, lumps, color changes, swallowing difficulty, or persistent hoarseness deserve professional attention, even when they are not painful.

At the next preventive visit

  • Ask where inflammation or plaque recurs
  • Review changes in medications or health
  • Ask which findings are being monitored
  • Confirm your recommended visit interval
  • Request technique guidance for difficult areas

Use products with purpose

Toothpaste, rinses, fluoride products, sensitivity products, and powered tools should address a clear need. More products are not always better; ask how each recommendation fits your risk.
